Trayvon Martin traveled to Sanford on a trip with his father. The teen returned to his Miami home in a body bag. Martin, 17, was shot and killed Feb. 26 by a neighborhood crime watch captain.

The circumstances of the shooting are still unknown, but the 26-year-old man who shot Martin, George Zimmerman, gave a statement to police that he shot in 'self-defense'.

Martin’s grieving family said the teen went out around 7:30 on that Sunday during the NBA All-Star Game halftime to get snacks from a nearby 7-Eleven convenience store. He purchased Skittles candies and an Arizona iced tea for his stepbrother.

Somehow, on the way back to the Central Florida townhouse where Martin was staying, he ran into Zimmerman, who was armed with a 9mm handgun, reports said.

Martin was shot once in the chest.

“He had a gun, and Trayvon had Skittles," said Benjamin Crump, the family’s attorney. “We want justice.”
Bill Lee, Sanford’s police chief, said the case is still under investigation and that he was waiting to finalize it before sending it on to the Seminole County state attorney’s office.

“We need to get all the facts and circumstances straight so that we can determine what truly happened,” Lee said.

“We need answers,” Crump said. “The neighborhood watch was supposed to protect him, not kill him.”
Here’s what happened, according to the Sanford police report:

Martin, who was staying at The Retreat at Twin Lakes townhome community, was walking home from the store when he caught the attention of Zimmerman, who began following the teen in his car. At one point, Zimmerman called 911, telling the operator about a "suspicious person in the area."

Soon after the 911 call, Zimmerman and the teen got into an altercation. Police declined to comment on who confronted whom first or what the altercation was about.

Several persons called 911 when they heard shots. It was unclear how many shots were fired. It’s also unclear whether Zimmerman shot him from inside or if he stepped out of the car.
Police found Martin’s body lying on the grass about 70 yards from his family’s home.
He had $22, candy and iced tea in his pockets.

Tracy Martin is demanding answers from police about his son’s death.

“Why isn’t this guy in jail? He said my son was a threat. How was he a threat? I don’t know what he could’ve done to generate that reaction; a 140-pound kid.”

The family’s attorney has asked for the 911 recordings, but police say the case is still under investigation.
The Seminole County state attorney’s office has not yet received the case from police, spokeswoman Lynn Bumpus-Hooper said.

Not much is known about Zimmerman. A listed phone number has been disconnected. Martin’s family members said police told them Zimmerman was a college graduate with no criminal background.

In the community’s most recent newsletter, he is listed as the contact for those wanting more information the crime watch group.

Laura Mills, the private community’s property manager, declined to comment on Zimmerman’s whereabouts or his status on the watch team.

"When I asked the police why there’s been no arrest, they told me they respected the guy’s background, that he had a four-year degree; that he was clean," Tracy Martin said. “But did they check my unarmed son’s record? No.”

Martin, who lived with his mother in South Florida, was a junior at Dr. Michael M. Krop Senior High School in North Miami-Dade, just south of the Broward County line. He was out of school because he had gotten suspended for a week. Tracy Martin would not give details about the suspension, but said he took his son to the Central Florida town, best known as the auto train stop closest to Orlando, “to disconnect and get his priorities straight.”

His cousin Stephen Martin, 20, described him as detail-oriented and a “mastermind with his hands.”
“He would break down a dirt bike and put it back together; then ride it all over the neighborhood,’’ Stephen Martin said.

Lee, Sanford’s police chief, said the neighborhood watch started after the community was hit with several property crimes. The group works directly with police.

  1. HOW OUTRAGEOUS!! What kind of a sick, demented, coward, must this Zimmerman be! Looking for "enemies" that he could "attack" while the real enemy was concealed within his own heart. In the meantime, he still walks about freely while this poor boy is forever 17 years of age.

    1. This was wrong. From what we know to this point, there is no justification and Justice needs to be served. I am sure they are looking into it and trying to figure out the best way to make this scenario look like it was Tayvon's fault and to do damage control for Zimmerman. One thing we do not need is to make this a race issue yet. Race may be a factor, but this seperates us in seeking justice for this young man. We are all the same, this is one of ours that was murdered, and one of ours that shot him. Punishment for the accused is what we are looking for here, so we need to put the race card back in the deck. Every time it is pulled we go backwards in time. We cannot move forward when it (race)comes up whenever anyone other than caucasion is attacked. That may very well be the motivating factor, it cannot be beaten until it is put to rest. I say again, we are all the same, no matter the outward appearance. The important thing here is that Justice be obtained for this young man.

  6. Wow, after what little I could find on the case its sounding like Zimmerman was waiting for a "kill" opportunity and found a nice unarmed one to make an example and send a message of fear out "to never mess around this gated community while "El Z" is WC !!! With his overzealous 911 call frequency and Florida's new liberal kill law he probably thought he'd be heralded in the news as a hero (he actually is on FOX news and with Glen Beck)... He'll probably be contacted by the RNC and leap ahead of the polls over Mit.
A real American tragedy and hopefully justice will prevail in the end.

  7. This Zimmerman guy needs to be taken off the streets. Who really cares about his background? The only thing this young man did was W.W.B. (WALKING WHILE BLACK). There is so many injustices in this world. I just pray Young Martin's case won't be one of them.

  8. I agree that Zimmerman is a coward - and so are the police staff there - Its rediculously sad that the FBI even had to get involved for the authorities to take notice. I pray to God for the family to receive justice for their son, may he rest in piece.

  9. For Zimmerman to not be in custody is completely unacceptable. Anytime Tayvon Martin was running away from Zimmerman, how was he a threat? It disgusts me how our (black) children are dehumanized and idiots with guns somehow think that it is right to execute them. I think Zimmerman should be tried, found guilty and issued the death penalty. I find this whole situation disturbing because I have a son who is now 24 years old but could have very well run into a bigotted, narrow minded, homocidal fool such as Mr. Zimmerman. May God Bless the Martin family.

  10. The important statement Zimmerman made to the 911 was "these a*****s always get away", this is important as it gives an insight to Zimmerman's thought process. The first part "these a*****s" the only thing that would distinguish the boy would be the color of his skin. The second bit "always get away" that would mean from a crime. Zimmerman had already judged the boy to have already committed a crime, having prejudged by stereotype it was just a matter of the good vigilante to do the execution, a bullet to teenagers chest as he screamed for help.

  11. I live in the UK and we do not have the gun in society as you do in America, even the police do not carry guns, we do have trained armed response and that's as far as it goes, which is good thing! I was in the British army for nine years and the shooting team so I have shot a lot more guns than the average person, asked if I would like to carry a gun as protection then my answer would have to be a resounding no. The reason is that even a trained person can make mistake and have an accidental discharge, as long as you live with the gun you live with the dangers of that gun, as for giving you protection, unlikely, it is more likely to get you killed than to save you, if a person is going to use a gun to say rob you then they use that gun to scare you into cooperating, as Zimmerman tried to do with the boy, the person using the gun will already have that gun trained on you, the act of you going for your gun, either in the holster or in your glove compartment of your car is going to get you shot and most probably killed or another scenario, you hear an intruder in you house and you go to confront that person with your gun, that person still has the opportunity to shoot you first because you have to ID that person, it could be your kid sleep walking or a drunk who entered your house by mistake The argument to have a gun for protection does not hold water. The gunman is not going to wait for you to get your gun and he will be one step ahead, and if he sees you with a gun he will probably shoot first for his protection!
Did Zimmerman deliberately shoot the boy? I don't think so, it was the DIY cop trying to retrain, in his mind what was a stereo suspect and using a gun to get him to cooperate. But trying to restrain the boy at the same time as holding a gun on him, who, quite rightly thought he was being mugged and was defending himself from the assumed stalker and mugger. Zimmerman using his gun to get cooperation from a boy fighting back was a recipe for disaster and accidental discharge of the gun. The boy paid the ultimate price of an armed wannabe cop with his life and Zimmerman, even if he does not go to jail will still pay with his troubled conscious, everyone who wants to have guns in their society should take responsibility for the death of this boy as this is the consequences of the unhealthy love affair with the gun. I can also see the dilemma of the president as it will be the end of a democratic president to change the constitution and ban guns, its like all the other things smoking, junk food and alcohol damaging for society but difficult to end. The problem with guns is that the consequences are usually with another party!

  13. My sympathies to the family of the boy and to Mr Zimmerman, trust me it will be easier on you in the long run to fess up and tell the truth, the truth will set you free!

To America from across the pond, how many of your American kids have to be killed or injured for you to get the message that there is no place for the gun in a peaceful society!
Thousands of your kids are killed and injured each year by unintended consequences of the gun! Take courage and give them up, give up hunting and target shooting and know that you are saving kids who accidentally shoot themselves. Reject machines of death and embrace the innocent, they are the future.

Think hard. Do you love your American kids less than you love your guns?

Get rid of your guns and save the innocent!

    Regards

  15. A women who knew her son was mentally ill with a propensity for violence then taught him to shoot and gave him access to automatic weapons, who could see that one coming? In your country money translates to power. The NRA have had their way in politics and have received more money thru the proliferation of guns until they are entrenched in politics, more powerful than ever. Gun control does not work, prohibition is the only way and even then you will go on to suffer these events just fewer of them.
The definition of a good responsible gun owner is the one who recognises the fact that they should not own one!
A thought this Christmas for all the parents who's Christmas's are never going to be the same due to guns.
